School of Open and Distance Learning - Mombasa Learning Centre
The Mombasa Learning Centre (under the School of Open and Distance Learning – ODeL Campus) - previously known as Mombasa Extra Mural Centre was established in 1987 and was located at Jubilee Insurance Building. Then, it was known as The Institute of Adult Education and was established to offer Learner Support Services to the Bachelor of Education students who were studying through the Distance Learning Mode. The Learning Centre began to offer face to face diploma programs in 2000 where it began by rolling out two diploma programmes – Diploma in Business Management and Diploma in Sales and Management. This portfolio of courses was later expanded to include Diploma courses in Human Resource Management, Public Relations Management, Guidance and Counselling, Purchasing and Supplies Management and Project Planning and Management. Due to the Motto of the Extra Mural Centre, various certificate courses, such as Public Relations Management, Guidance and Counselling, were developed and offered not only in Mombasa but other regional centres such as Malindi, Mpeketoni in Lamu, and Mwatate in Taita Taveta.
The Learning Centre began to offer the Master of Arts Degree in Project Planning and Management in 2008 and the Bachelor of Project Planning and Management in 2012. It was due to the increased demand of the courses offered by the Center and also the need to have all University of Nairobi Programmes housed in a single and strategic location, the Learning Centre relocated to Uni-Plaza Building, along Aga Khan Walk, Mombasa in the year 2012. Apart from face to face leaning, the Learning Centre also offers courses on the Open, Distance and e- Learning modes in which learners have the flexibility to choose from a variety of options in relation to the time, place, instructional methods and other factors related to their learning needs.
